ISLANDER

Julian MacGregor

It was a long beach, almost straight, the pale white sand backed by a low line of grass-topped dunes. Lines of waves were rolling in from his left, parallel crests which broke with a foaming rush, uncurling along their length like someone slowly pulling open a zip.
-
The voice which had carried on the wind had sounded human, like a cry for help.
-
‘It’s a police matter. What could we do? If they’re sure it was an accident, that’s it isn’t it?’
-
‘There’s a man living rough on this island, a man who doesn’t want to be found.’

-

'So what are we supposed to do here, kneel and worship James bloody Hutton?'

-

A familiar shape loomed up out of the dark. It was Gryphaea, running lights and the lit-up interior of the saloon confirmed it.

-

There was a look of desperate fear in his eyes, as with arms thrashing, he sank completely.
